Fun is at the Heart of Wichita

No matter the time of year or the weather, family attractions in Wichita, Kansas offer plenty of indoor and outdoor options to keep everyone entertained.

The entire family will enjoy the Museums on the River, a group of attractions along the scenic Arkansas River. These include Botanica Wichita’s 30 themed gardens, living history at Old Cowtown Museum, an impressive collection of American art at the Wichita Art Museum, the 44-foot-tall Keeper of the Plains sculpture, the Mid-America All-Indian Museum, Exploration Place science center and the Wichita Baseball Museum at Riverfront Stadium.

Some of the amazing outdoor animal experiences include Sedgwick County Zoo, home to more than 3,000 animals; Tanganyika Wildlife Park, known for hands-on experiences with lemurs, hippos, rhinos and more; and the Great Plains Nature Center, with free Kansas wildlife exhibits and two miles of trails through wetlands, prairie and riparian habitats. You won’t want to miss the Kansas Wildlife Exhibit located inside Central Riverside Park near downtown Wichita.

Among the one-of-a-kind attractions in the Wichita area are the B-29 Doc Hangar, Education & Visitors Center, home to one of only two airworthy Boeing B-29s left in the world; Frank Lloyd Wright’s Allen House Museum and Study Center, considered one of the top 10 Wright home tours; Field Station: Dinosaurs, North America’s largest dinosaur theme park; and The Original Pizza Hut Museum, which is located on the Wichita State University campus and tells the story of two brothers who opened the first Pizza Hut in Wichita in 1958.

Approximately 45 minutes northwest of Wichita, you’ll find a few must-see attractions worthy of a day trip. There’s the Cosmosphere International SciEd Center & Space Museum, a Smithsonian-affiliated museum with the largest combined collection of U.S. and Russian space artifacts in the world, and STRATACA, an underground salt museum offering tours and special events.
