The Role

The Social Media & Digital Content Manager creates, develops, and implements digital content and social media strategies that promote Wichita as a “must-visit” Midwest city.  The Social Media & Digital Content Manager will be solely responsible for all Visit Wichita social media platforms, with an emphasis on engagement, and will be jointly responsible for website content with the Visit Wichita Website Manager.  The Social Media & Digital Content Manager will be proficient in behavioral targeting, geographic targeting, and trend monitoring. Social media & digital content manager will also create and edit video content for multi-platform use.

Essential Functions    

  • Create, update, and manage all content for Visit Wichita social media platforms, integrated with website content strategies and tactics
    • Create all social posts and live videos, general video content, and other interactive content; resize header images and branding items for social channels.  Create simple social graphics and work closely with internal graphic designer, who will create still images, and carousel images, to post via social channels
  • Create and regularly monitor content on the Visit Wichita website
    • Write content for website as needed 
    • Assist with blog and visitor email content as needed
    • Search for and gather photos needed for blogs, social media, and website
  • Shoot and edit videos to be used on social media platforms and on the website, as well as to distribute to partners and stakeholders
  • Write towards specific audiences and create compelling content that drives visitors to the website and drives engagement with Visit Wichita social and web content
  • Manage the social media budget and ensure performance measures are met or exceeded
  • Maintain organization of photo library by labeling images appropriately, tagging for SEO, taking new photos/video, and seeking out new imagery through social channels, as well as requesting permission to use images 
  • Follow all stakeholders at the local, regional, and national levels, and interact appropriately
  • Retain Visit Wichita’s performance for responsiveness
  • Serve as lead for all co-op social media contests and campaigns internally as well as with Partners and community organizations 
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Direct Social Engagement Strategy

  • Benchmark other tourism websites and social channels to ensure Visit Wichita is delivering a superior social experience while driving engagement
  • Know key audiences of leisure traveler as well as meeting planners, appropriately creating content to be used on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, and Pinterest with recommendations for future platforms
  • Follow forums regarding best practices, trends, and performance metrics
  • Seek out trends and present ideas to senior management and ultimately take the lead in incorporating new elements into the overall social media strategy 
  • Offer recommendations for improved performance

Manage all aspects of social media relationships including but not limited to:

  • Follow and interact with all applicable groups, including travel writers and meeting planner groups
    • Work with PR Manager to support and enhance travel writer/influencer visits
    • Alert PR Manager of social influencers to potentially host
  • Share Partner content and engage with partners, as well as report the benefits of our social media efforts
  • Track all Partner mentions 
  • Offer training, both internally and externally as a Partner benefit

Provide reports and analysis of social efforts and performance:

  • Gather and report performance metrics to senior management providing analysis focusing on trends, industry standards and performance versus goal and prior year
  • Make recommendations for improved engagement on all platforms; make necessary adjustments to non-performing content
  • Offer reporting that takes into account national standards and demonstrates solid performance


  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of social media/integrated marketing/communications preferred
  • 5 years experience in a position directly managing social media strategy and implementation 
  • Experience in shooting and editing compelling short videos
  • Professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to build a social media community 
  • Experience as a brand advocate
  • Proficiency in behavioral targeting, geographic targeting, and trend monitoring and SEO
  • Deep curiosity about Wichita and desire to highlight via social media and the website all the places that make Wichita a great place to visit
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel; proficient in Photoshop and ability to resize content for optimal social platform performance; proficient in both PC and MAC environments; familiar with cloud computing environments
  • Proficient in social performance analytics and ability to monitor, understand and stay ahead of algorithm changes on all platforms
  • Experience in collaborating with internal and external partners
  • Self-starter with the ability to finish projects in a timely and efficient manner
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment under tight deadlines and maintain professionalism 
  • Willingness to work special events as assigned
  • Prior travel and tourism experience a plus
