    Title: Executive Director Sports Development

    Reports to: Visit Wichita President/CEO

    Direct Reports: Sports Sales Manager

    Summary: The Executive Director role has been created to advance the newly developed Visit Wichita Sports Event Sales Strategy. The Executive Director will assume the responsibility of managing, leading and driving the overall production and performance of all sports-related activities and serve as the organization’s sports industry leader.

    Major Responsibilities:

    1. Develop, communicate, and execute the Sports Event Sales Strategy. Establish short-term sales goals. Report progress on milestones. 

    Strategic Plan:

    • Drive and oversee strategy in developing and achieving short and long-term goals
    • Work closely with the President/CEO and partners to drive the event strategy

    Business Plan:

    • Manage team to achieve short and long-term goals

    2. Lead the effort to generate visitor spending for sporting events.

    • Cultivate and maintain a close working relationship with local, state, regional and national governing bodies, event rights holders, promoters and meeting planners to attract events to Wichita
    • Generate new sports events for Wichita by evaluating new business opportunities
    • Represent Wichita on the local, state, regional, national and international levels for sports-related issues and programs
    • Oversee bid development
    • Partner with marketing department to ensure programs are enhancing Wichita’s position as a sports destination

    3. Lead Sports Communication efforts.

    • Create communication strategy plan to engage sports stakeholders, including but not limited to; sports facility managers and key sports experts
    • Develop and lead regular sports focused meetings

    4. Oversee and direct event support.

    • Manage services for events to ensure success in Wichita and to retain future business
    • Determine servicing and support requirements (including financial commitment) for each event

    5. Manage department budget.

    • Develop, recommend and monitor annual budget

    6. Promote funding from all potential sources.

    • Provide sponsorship opportunities for corporate partners to gain exposure with targeted sports audience

    7. Personnel

    • Serve as mentor to Sports Sales Manager to ensure growth opportunities
    • Ensure compliance with personnel policies
    • Conduct annual review and evaluation of staff

    Education and Experience:

    • A four-year degree from an accredited college or university preferred
    • At least 10 years of increasingly responsible sports marketing and/or travel related experience or closely related field to include at least four (4) years in an event management, bid development or sports marketing leadership role

    Competencies and Skills:

    • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
    • Ability to speak and deliver effective presentations
    • Team orientation and ability to work collaboratively with all levels of associates and clients
    • Planning skills – ability to set direction, establish priorities and action plans and reconcile multiple/conflicting priorities
    • Ability to promote opportunities to increase revenue

    As our Convention Services Manager, you’ll have the opportunity to promote and sell the services of Visit Wichita to meeting planners and association officials from around the country.  You will become the point of contact for Visit Wichita once a meeting is secured by the convention sales team.  You love Wichita and you love helping clients to ensure their event is a success.     Role

    • The Convention Services Manager is responsible for working with and providing outstanding customer service to every client that has chosen Wichita to host their event/group/convention/meeting.  Strong communication skills both written and verbal. Capable of exercising initiative, judgment, tact and diplomacy in a wide variety of public contact situations. Ability to work cooperatively within a small office environment. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.  Hospitality industry experience helpful.  Bachelor’s degree preferred or a minimum three years related industry experience.  Role reports directly to Vice President of Sales.  Must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license and an insured vehicle for periodic business use.

    Responsibilities              

    • Provide outstanding customer service to every Visit Wichita client that has chosen Wichita to host their event/group/convention/meeting
    • Correspond with all meeting planners regarding services that Visit Wichita offers that will enhance their event/convention/meeting and execute needed services.  This includes, but is not limited to: registration assistance, printing name badges, providing brochures and promotional materials such as welcome bags and attraction discounts, etc.
    • Track convention bookings through software systems, reviewing the requirements of conventions meeting in Wichita
    • Fulfill brochure orders and personally distributes to groups once they arrive in Wichita
    • Meet with meeting planner once they are in Wichita to ensure the event is a success and to trouble shoot when needed
    • Set up registration tables and charging station (45lbs) as needed
    • Oversee Hospitality Team, which assists groups with registration, etc.  Prepare work assignments as needed
    • Work with the convention sales staff to secure weddings, family reunions and bureau service sports groups
    • Ensure large convention and visitor venues, (INTRUST Bank Arena, Century II, Hartman Arena, Towanda Visitor’s Center) are stocked with Visitor Guides
    • Create and maintain weekly services calendar to keep all informed as to the status of various events
    • Document the activities of the convention services department for reporting purposes
    • Greet Visitor Center walk-in guests and answer the phone each day for approx. 30 minutes or as needed 
    • Keep directory of programming and servicing options and develop new service offerings
    • Initiate and maintain an open channel of communication and a spirit of cooperation with both internal and external partners
    • Assist with attendance building efforts for conferences that are secured by sales managers, some travel maybe required
    • Distribute post-convention survey for groups who host events in Wichita and compile feedback
    • Perform other duties as assigned
