Elizabeth Athens, Assistant Curator at Worchester Art Museum, will discuss the melding of the sensory language of advertising and fine art by pop icon Andy Warhol. Though Warhol's use of advertising language and aesthetics is widely known -- particularly his infamous use of soup cans at the start of his career--of less renown is his 1969 television advertisement for the Manhattan-based Schrafft's restaurant chain. This short, 60-sedond commercial titled "Underground Sundae" represents the ultimate merger of fine art and advertising, and this the ultimate pop art masterpiece. Athens places this commercial work by Warhol in the larger fascinations of the pop era.
