Talk Summary - Underway on Nuclear Power
The US Navy’s nuclear program is the oldest and safest nuclear energy program in the world. In a world of energy crises and environmental concerns, nuclear power is a proven and reliable energy source that is unfortunately widely misunderstood. With high profile accidents such as Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and Fukushima, valid concerns are raised but also distract from the millions of hours of safe operation in nuclear plants around the world. Come learn about the first large-scale nuclear energy program and its successful 75-year history, from its pioneering founder, Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, to life onboard a modern, nuclear-powered floating city.
About the Speaker - Taylor Ubert
Taylor Ubert is currently the Museum Store Assistant Manager here at Museum of World Treasures and he is also pursuing degrees at Wichita State in both history and anthropology. Taylor previously served nine years in the United States Navy as a nuclear technician. Having first trained in Charleston, SC for two years, he was assigned to the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George H W Bush (CVN77) and deployed overseas in 2017. During his time on the ship Taylor served as a supervisor for maintenance, operations, and quality assurance in the engine rooms.
