Lake Afton will be open on Sunday, January 20th, for a special viewing of the Lunar Eclipse / Blood Moon through our telescopes. While the entire event will take several hours, the maximum eclipse will occur at about 11:30pm Sunday night
A Lunar Eclipse is similar in some ways to a Solar Eclipse, which many of you experienced in August of 2017. However, while a Solar Eclipse involves the Moon passing between the Earth and Sun, a Lunar Eclipse involves the Earth passing between the Sun and the Moon. The Moon turns a red color after it enters the Earth's shadow because of the sunlight refracting the light through the Earth's atmosphere - this is also the same reason you see a red sky or clouds during a sunset.
