STEM Station at Exploration Place

From: 11:00 AM to 04:00 PM, July 13, 2024 | Exploration Place

Hands-on science experiments

We’re introducing a whole new way to interact with STEM activities this summer. Join us at STEM Station for a fun, interactive experiment where you are the scientist! We will have a new experiment each week and all guests are invited to participate. Some experiments may not be appropriate for all ages.

New experiments each week! Examples of STEM Station Activities include:

Dry Ice Bubbles
There’s something magical about a bubble. It’s just a little puff of air trapped inside a thin film of soap and water, but its precise spherical shape and beautiful swirling colors make it a true wonder of science. Bubbles are amazing on their own, but bubbles filled with fog are even cooler. Now imagine if you could bounce and play with these bubbles, holding them in your hands without popping.

Electricity in Action
When turned on, the dome of the Van de Graaff generator becomes charged (either positive or negative depending on its design). Anything in contact with the dome also gains the same charge. If a person holds the dome, they will become charged, and their hair might stand on end if it is long and dry enough.

Fire Bubbles
Propane-filled bubbles will be set on fire in the palm of your hand! Staff will help you scoop a soapy mixture into your hand and light them on fire. Have cameras ready because they burn up quickly, created a cool photo op. The water on your hand prevents you from getting burned and the effect is astounding.

Geode Cracking
Creating a circle of pressure points around the circumference of the geode, the levers are compressed and the chain tightens. The points etch the geode with tremendous pressure and break open the geode to expose the beautiful crystals inside. Participants will be able to take their geode home with them. Please note: There will be a nominal fee for this activity.

Giant Bubbles
Grasp onto a sturdy rope suspended from above and give it a strong tug downward. As you do, a magical bubble begins to form around you, enclosing your body in a shimmering sphere of iridescent colors. It’s an enchanting activity where you can experience the joy of creating a bubble world simply by pulling on a rope!

Harmonograph
The harmonograph consists of a felt pen that remains stationary and a platform that swings beneath the pen. As the platform swings, the pen marks on a sheet of paper that is fastened to the platform, generating beautiful repetitive patterns which grow smaller with each repetition.

Laser Cutting

A laser cutter is a machine that uses a high-energy focused laser beam to cut into various plate or sheet materials to create 2-dimensional parts for both hobbyist and industrial applications. You will select a design and watch as it comes to life. Participants will be able to take their laser cut project home with them. Please note: there will be a nominal fee for this activity.
