    It's that time of year again! Blue Baboon Books is ready to kick off its summer challenges. Plural? Yes, plural. We've got TWO challenges to keep kids' brains sharp this summer. And if both challenges are completed, the reward is a PIZZA PARTY!!

    First, let's talk about the kickoff party: There will be a scavenger hunt throughout the store, a color-your-own bookmark craft, and snacks! The kickoff party is an open house. So get here when you can, and stay as long as you'd like.

    Now to the challenges ...

    SUMMER READING CHALLENGE
    This year we want kids to spend more quality time reading, and not be concerned with how many books they read. Each participant will be given a reading log where they will write down the number of minutes each day they are reading. We don’t care if they’re reading a novel, a graphic novel, a picture book, a comic book, or magazine. Just read! Throughout the summer they’ll be able to collect prizes for the time they’ve read.
    * 300 minutes: A free bookmark.
    * 500 minutes: A free PlayFoam pod.
    * 1000 minutes: A free pen or squeeze toy from our do-dad counter.
    * 2000 minutes: 50% of any one item in our store.

    SUMMER BRIDGE WORKBOOK CHALLENGE
    Summer Bridge Workbooks are meant to combat summer learning lag. With just 15 minutes a day, kids can keep their brains sharp and ready for the upcoming school year. The workbooks are meant to bridge kids between grades. So there's a kindergarten-to-first-grade workbook, first- to second-grade book, and so on all the way up to a seventh- through eighth-grade book.

    When you purchase a Summer Bridge Workbook from Blue Baboon Books, your child is eligible for our workbook challenge. Additionally, each Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., we’ll be hosting Workbook Wednesday. Workbook Wednesday is designed to help kids stay on task and visit with peers. Our staff is available to help with any questions about the workbook.

    Each book is divided into three sections (or months) and contains math, science, reading, and writing exercises. Rewards for the Summer Bridge Workbook Challenge rewards are as follows:
    * Finish the first section of the book (including bonus pages): A free PlayFoam pod.
    * Finish the second section of the book (including bonus pages): Get one free pen or squeeze toy from our do-dad counter.
    * Finish the entire book (including bonus pages): Get 50% off any one item in our store.

    PIZZA PARTY!
    Any child who completes the highest level of BOTH the Summer Reading Challenge and the Summer Bridge Workbook Challenge will be invited to a pizza-and-pop party at Blue Baboon Books! Our treat!

    Frequently Asked Questions
    What if my child is too young to read on his or her own?
    No problem. Just log the minutes that s/he is being read to by someone else.

    Is there an age limit on the challenges?
    The Blue Baboon Books summer challenges are for babies through eighth-graders.

    I purchased the Summer Bridge Workbook somewhere else. Can my child still participate in your workbook challenge?
    No. The Summer Bridge Workbooks must be purchased at Blue Baboon Books and contain the Blue Baboon Books stamp on the first page of the book.

    Do audio books count toward reading minutes?
    No, the goal is to read for the summer reading challenge.

    What if my child likes to read the same book over and over again?
    That’s fine. Reading the same thing over and over increases reading confidence and comprehension. Any time s/he is reading, log those minutes!

    Do the books my child reads have to be purchased from Blue Baboon Books?
    Nope. While we’d love your support, kids can read books from home, the library, friends, or wherever!

    Will you be checking the workbooks?
    Before a child collects a prize, we will be checking to be sure that s/he has completed the section to the best of his or her ability. That includes the bonus sections.

    What’s the deadline for these challenges?
    Both challenges must be completed by close of business on Saturday, Aug. 3.
