Get your team ready for this hot summer event! The 2017 Wagonmasters Downtown Chili Cookoff. Are you ready? You can get in on the action with a $5 tasting kit that can be purchased at the event. Public tasting starts at noon and you’ll be able to sample more than 70 varieties of chili and salsa made by teams from Kansas and surrounding states. Competitors include cooks vying for a spot in the World Championship Chili Cookoff, groups of co-workers or friends cooking for fun, non-profits and restaurants. Chili categories include no beans, chili verde, red chili, home-style chili, anything goes and there’s also a salsa competition.
What else is going on at the Wichita Wagonmasters Chili Cookoff? Well, Mr. Hot Stuff will march around and strut his stuff on the main stage at 2:15 p.m. With cheers from the audience, a chosen winner will win $100.
Ms. Chili Pepper is bringing the heat at 2:30 p.m. She's a real crowd-pleaser and the loudest applause lands the winner $100.
Do you think you have what it takes to be the king of the peppers? If you're into the hot and spicy, join in the Pepper Eating Contest and eat as many peppers as you can in five minutes. Whoever eats the most without losing it takes home $100. That'll cool you off! The Pepper Eating Contest starts at 2:45 p.m.
Wichita Wagonmasters are a group working to promote and sell the "good life" in Wichita. And yes, these wagonmasters are the same that ride under the command of Admiral Windwagon Smith at Wichita's Riverfest, the largest and longest-running festival in the state.
