As one of the first cities in the country to commission public art under a National Endowment for the Arts program, the community’s artistic culture is driving force for what to do in Wichita. With artwork by nationally recognized artists, the latest Broadway world-class theatres, tons of art galleries and museums, Wichita is the artistic center in the region.
The Wichita Art Museum is the largest art museum in Kansas, housing popular works by Dale Chihuly, Mary Cassatt, Edward Hopper, John Steuart Curry, Winslow Homer and Charles M. Russell. The Ulrich Museum of Art at WSU offers a nationally renowned collection of more than 6000 works of modern and contemporary art. Music Theatre of Wichita and Theater League bring the most popular musicals to Wichita, often hosting regional and American premieres of shows. On the Final Friday of every month, Wichita’s most popular art museums and art galleries open their doors for free admission to the latest shows and exhibits.
