You enjoy both time in the office working on the computer as well as getting out and meeting with partners, recruiting volunteers and running point on large sporting events. You take pride in your organizational skills and consider that one of your best strengths. You are great at multitasking and can deal with high stress situations during events. You are a team player and have a passion for Wichita. You are goal oriented and have a proven track record of success. And most of all, you LOVE putting on great events.

Role:

The sports event manager is responsible for producing great sporting events and working with internal colleagues and external partners to help grow & strengthen sporting events in Wichita, thereby enhancing the economic development of the City, County, Region and State. Must be willing to work some nights and weekends depending on the sporting event calendar. Role reports directly to the Vice President of Sports Development.

Responsibilities:

  • Organize and operate sporting events hosted by Visit Wichita
  • Delegate tasks and oversee event-day staff for sporting events
  • Creating and overseeing Local Organizing Committees (LOC) for events
  • Recruit and train volunteers for sporting events
  • Oversee and manage volunteer scheduling software
  • Maintain and update events & tasks in our project management software
  • Serve as liaison between sports rights holders and partners
  • Maintain well-informed, working knowledge of all local facilities, attractions and services
  • Complete and submit pre and post-event reports as assigned
  • Collaborate with marketing department to ensure a unified and effective promotional effort
  • Oversee and manage sports calendar of events
  • Help plan other Visit Wichita special events as needed
  • Occasional travel to scout future events and attend trade shows
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Sports Development

Education and Experience:

  • A four-year degree from an accredited college or university preferred
  • 5 years’ experience planning and facilitating events, preferably in sports and recruitment of and overseeing volunteers
  • Experience being a team player in a work environment

Competencies and Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Team orientation and ability to work collaboratively with all levels of associates and clients
  • Ability to multi-task and work on many different things at once
  • Levelheaded and able to remain calm
  • Planning skills – ability to set direction, establish priorities and action plans and reconcile multiple/conflicting priorities
  • Able to work nights and weekends
  • Must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license and an insured vehicle for periodic business use

Job:

Full-time

Schedule: 

Monday–Friday, with occasional weekends as events require
