Friday Evening

Check into your hotel and head straight for the Delano District, where historic brick streets, colorful murals and local patios make it easy to settle into vacation mode.

Dinner at The Monarch feels like the right first move. Good food. Great patio. No rush.

As sunset fades, claim a spot near the Keeper of the Plains and wait for the main event, the Ring of Fire. Every summer evening at 9 p.m., the fire pots surrounding Wichita's iconic landmark burst to life for 15 minutes, transforming a peaceful riverfront stroll into something a little more dramatic. It's equal parts history, spectacle and "wow, I wasn't expecting that.”

Not bad for the first few hours.

Saturday Morning

The best summer weekends start early.

Grab a coffee from Reverie Coffee Roasters, named one of USA Today's 10Best Independent Coffee Shops in 2026, then make your way to the Old Town Farm & Art Market. Arrive around 7 or 8 a.m. while the air is still cool and the market is buzzing with locals stocking up on fresh produce, baked goods and handmade finds.

Spend an hour or so wandering the market before making a couple of classic Wichita stops. Follow your nose to The Spice Merchant for freshly roasted coffee, loose-leaf teas and specialty foods, then pop into Nifty Nut House, where roasted nuts, chocolates and nostalgic candies have been tempting locals and visitors alike for decades. Consider it your official snack stop for the weekend.

Before the Kansas sun has a chance to settle in for the day, head to one of Wichita's most unforgettable attractions.

At Tanganyika Wildlife Park, you can hand-feed lemurs, get nose-to-nose with penguins, swim with otters and experience animal encounters that feel more safari than Kansas. You can choose to make this an all-day experience by cooling off at the splash park.

Or spend the morning at Sedgwick County Zoo, consistently recognized as one of the nation’s premier zoos. In 2026, USA Today ranked it No. 10 for Best Zoo and No. 7 for Best Zoo Exhibit for the Reed Family Elephants of the Zambezi River Valley. This summer is an especially memorable time to visit, as the zoo celebrates the arrival of four African elephant calves born in the spring and summer of 2025. Watching these playful young elephants explore their habitat and interact with the herd has quickly become one of Wichita’s most beloved wildlife experiences.

Either way, you'll leave with photos nobody expects to see from Wichita.

Saturday Afternoon

By now, the Kansas sun is making some strong suggestions.

Take the hint.

Grab lunch, enjoy a little hotel pool time, or find a cool place to recharge before the evening gets started. After all, you've got brewery patios, baseball games and retro arcade battles waiting for you later.

No need to sprint through a summer weekend.

Saturday Evening

After a quick recharge, head to Nortons Brewing Company. Order a locally brewed beer, sample one of their rotating seasonal offerings and grab a seat on the spacious outdoor patio. With plenty of room for kids to roam and adults to relax, it's the kind of place where one round easily turns into an extra hour. On a summer evening, there's no better spot to kick back and soak in Wichita's laid-back vibe.

From there, make your way downtown and see where the night takes you.

Catch a Wichita Wind Surge game at Equity Bank Park, challenge your crew to more than 75 80s and 90s games at The Arcade, or simply wander through Old Town, where historic brick warehouses now house restaurants, shops and entertainment venues.

Sunday Morning: One Last Wichita Wander

Brunch in Wichita isn't a meal. It's a strategy.

Settle in at The Belmont and take your time. Order another cup of coffee or mimosa than you probably need, split something sweet and enjoy one of Wichita's favorite brunch spots before heading out for one last adventure.

Then head back downtown and embrace your inner treasure hunter. Browse The Workroom for locally made goods, stylish finds and gifts you didn't know you needed, then lose track of time at Lucinda's, where every shelf seems to hold another unexpected discovery. Along the way, keep an eye out for the colorful murals and public art that make this corner of Wichita feel a little more creative around every turn.

The weekend may be winding down, but Wichita isn't finished with you yet. Take a final stroll through Botanica Wichita, find a shady spot along the river or savor a few extra minutes before heading home. Sometimes the best part of a getaway is realizing you're already planning your next one.
