Art is the blood of the culture in downtown Wichita as First Friday brings it to life on the first Friday of each month. What used to be Final Friday shifted to First Friday (Sept. 2019) as businesses align with a national push to celebrate art and creativity. The start of the month welcomes many new exhibition openings, making First Friday a gateway to those "first looks," into those galleries and museums.
Recognize the importance and beauty of all kinds of art as local galleries, studios, museums, restaurants and retail shops around Wichita stay open late to welcome visitors. This free event brings the community together in an appreciation of creativity and uniqueness.
First Friday locations are across the city, including a large concentration in the downtown area where visitors can ride the free Q-Line to visit more than 30 gallery showcases and venues, many of which offer free hors d'oeuvres and drinks.
Hours vary between galleries, but all are open during the core hours of 7-9 p.m. Several locations will incorporate artist demonstrations and/or live music.
Not only does this event give guests the opportunity to view creative art space, it also is an excellent time to purchase one-of-a-kind artwork directly from artists, or explore live performances like fire-breathers and live music.
While you’re experiencing the cultural vibe of downtown Wichita, be sure to keep an eye out for the many murals decorating the area. Also, look for other versions of urban art in this eclectic environment.
