At Tanganyika Wildlife Park, that could mean hand-feeding a giraffe, meeting lemurs, interacting with rhinos, petting kangaroos or getting up close with animals through one-of-a-kind behind-the-scenes experiences, such as feeding lions and swimming with otters. Yes, you can swim with otters. In fact, you can swim with penguins too.
Then head to Sedgwick County Zoo, recently recognized among the nation’s best in USA TODAY’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards. Home to more than 3,000 animals, the zoo offers an experience that rivals destinations in much larger cities. Don’t miss the Reed Family Elephants of the Zambezi River Valley exhibit, also recently designated a USA Today 10Best. This summer, visitors can also meet four African elephant calves turning one this year. All four were born in 2026 within months of each other, and Wichita is the only place in the country where all four can be seen together.
Pack in plenty of adventure

One of the newest family attractions is The Adventure Playscape at Exploration Place, an imaginative outdoor space designed for climbing, exploring and creative play. Pair it with the science center’s interactive exhibits and riverfront location and you’ve easily filled an afternoon – or possibly a whole day.
Families will also love the children’s garden – complete with a fully-restored 1949 Allan Herschell carousel – at Botanica Wichita, catch a movie under the stars at Starlite Drive-In or enjoy one of the many free summer events happening throughout the city.
Explore neighborhoods worth wandering
The best weekends leave room for a little spontaneity.
Spend time exploring distinct districts, such as Delano, Old Town, and the Douglas Design District, where local coffee shops, boutiques, breweries, murals and live music venues create the perfect backdrop for a laid-back summer afternoon. Get here soon and sip your way through Wichita with this year’s Wicked Brew Tour, a self-guided experience featuring local coffee shops, breweries, kombucha makers and other craft beverage destinations across the city.

Experience the Air Capital of the World
Wichita’s aviation story is unlike anywhere else in the country.
In addition to The Adventure Playscape at Exploration Place, the science center has Design Build Fly, an exhibit that offers a one-of-a-kind, interactive experience made possible by tapping into aerospace experts and resources in Wichita, known as the Air Capital of the World for its innovation and manufacturing aptitude in the aviation industry.
Visit the Kansas Aviation Museum and make your way to the control tower in what was once Wichita’s original airport. Climb inside one of only two airworthy B-29s in the world, “Doc,” at the B-29 Doc Hangar, Education and Visitors Center. If you’re looking to add something truly memorable to your weekend, you can even book a flight aboard the Superfortress.
Eat well all weekend long
One of the best parts of any getaway is the food, and Wichita consistently exceeds expectations.
From authentic international cuisine and local barbecue favorites to chef-driven restaurants and neighborhood gems, the city’s dining scene offers something for every appetite. Don’t leave without trying some of Wichita’s most iconic menu items, such a NuWay crumbly burger and homemade root beer.

Make a splash – or just kick back in the lazy river – at Rock River Rapids, spend the day at Blast Off Bay indoor water park or take a short drive to nearby Strataca, where you’ll descend 650 feet underground into one of the world’s largest salt mines where the temperature is a constant 68 degrees.
