Originally adopted on National Flag Day (June 14) in 1937, the Wichita city flag design symbolizes the spirit of Wichita and has become a synonymous with community spirit and hometown pride. It's been recognized nationally too. In fact, it ranked No. 6 out of 150 city flag designs in a national survey by the North American Vexillological Association — pretty impressive, but we might be a little biased!

While the flag’s bold red, white and blue design has flown for more than eight decades, Wichita’s “flag fever” really took off in the past 10–15 years. A big spark came when the Wichita Regional Chamber of Commerce began promoting creative ways the flag was being featured, which helped ignite a fresh wave of civic pride. Local group Together Wichita joined in, donating full-size Wichita flags to every school in USD 259 and to city departments, including the Wichita Police and Fire departments.

Today, you can spot the Wichita flag just about everywhere you look. It waves proudly from front porches and city buildings, but it also pops up in more unexpected places — painted on downtown murals, featured in street art, and emblazoned on T-shirts, hats, mugs and bumper stickers. Local small businesses like Cocoa Dolce ChocolatesNifty Nut House, Piatto Neapolitan Pizzeria, Pumphouse, 6S Steakhouse and Ziggy’s Pizza have incorporated the flag into their facades, décor and more. At times during the baseball season, the grass on the field at Equity Bank Park has been cut to depict the Wichita flag and several art installations in and around the stadium use elements of the flag. Even our own Visit Wichita office has a giant Wichita flag mural inside that makes a great selfie backdrop.

When touring Wichita’s murals, you’ll find several incorporating or featuring the city’s flag and countless of the city’s urban art creations feature the flag in various forms.
