Western Heritage, the Wichita Way
Before Wichita became known for aviation and innovation, it was one of the most important cattle towns in the American West.
That history still lives on today in places where visitors can walk dusty Old West streets, shop for handcrafted cowboy hats and spend the night in a covered wagon. It is the kind of American experience many international travelers imagine — authentic, immersive and unexpectedly real.
Not bad for a city most people never saw coming.

Step Into an Authentic Frontier Town
If you are going to experience Wichita’s Western heritage, start where the story comes alive.
Old Cowtown Museum is an open-air living history museum recreating Wichita in the 1860s and 1870s, back when the city was a rough-and-tumble cattle town full of railroad workers, cowboys and frontier businesses. More than 50 historic and reconstructed buildings line dusty streets where blacksmiths work, shopkeepers chat with visitors and gunfight reenactments occasionally break out.
It is immersive in the best way. Part museum, part movie set, part time machine.
