When the Kansas sun is on full display and the heat is on during summer months, there’s no better plan than heading indoors to stay entertained. Luckily, Wichita is packed with fun, cool adventures for families, couples and curious explorers alike. Whether you want to learn, play or make a splash, here are eight awesome indoor attractions to add to your summer bucket list — plus a few local tips to make the most of each one!

Two boys smile as they go down the slide at Blast Off Bay Water Park

Blast Off Bay

Blast Off Bay is an indoor water park that’s literally out of this world. You’ll find twisting slides, wave pools, a lazy river, a kids’ splash pad and even an indoor surf simulator — all indoors. It’s open year-round, so you can float and play no matter how cold or sweltering it gets outside.

Local Tip: Bring your own towels. They rent them, but locals know it’s easier (and cheaper) to pack a few extras. If you’re staying overnight, check out the attached Hampton Inn West Wichita Goddard for easy post-swim naps.

A young black boy and his sister play on the flight simulator at Exploration Place

Exploration Place

The city’s beloved riverfront science museum, Exploration Place, is a must for curious kids and adults alike. Play pilot in the aviation exhibit, experiment in the MakerSpace, watch an immersive movie in the giant Dome theater, or check out the rotating special exhibits such as this summer’s hit, Barbie You can Be Anything: The Experience.

Local Tip: Go after 5 p.m. on Thursday or Friday and you can catch sunset views of the Keeper of the Plains over the Arkansas River from the outdoor deck.

A woman takes a photo of a stuffed brown bear on exhibit at Museum of World Treasures

Museum of World Treasures

Step back in time with three stories of fascinating finds at Museum of World Treasures: a towering T.Rex skeleton (third largest in the world!), Egyptian mummies, Civil War relics and even a piece of the Berlin Wall. It’s quirky, packed with surprises, and perfect for an indoor history adventure.

Local Tip: Kids under 3 get in free and don’t skip the quirky gift shop for unique Kansas souvenirs.

Explore Wichita’s aviation heritage

It wouldn’t be Wichita without a nod to its aviation roots. Explore vintage planes inside the gorgeous art-deco former airport terminal at the Kansas Aviation Museum, then pop over to the B‑29 Doc Hangar to see (and sometimes tour) one of only two flying B‑29 bombers in the world, “Doc.”

Local Tip: Check their event calendars. Both spots often host special events and make sure Doc is in the hangar when you visit.

Climbers make their way up and down the wall at Bliss Climbing and Fitness in Wichita, KS.

Bliss Climbing and Fitness

Get your energy out and stay cool at Wichita’s largest indoor rock-climbing gym, Bliss Climbing and Fitness. With walls up to 38 feet tall, bouldering areas, and auto-belays for beginners, Bliss is fun for kids, teens and adventurous adults looking to climb without Kansas heat and humidity.

Local Tip: New climbers get a free orientation session — and if you visit during off-peak hours on weekdays, you’ll have more wall space to yourself.

Indoor arcades & adventure parks

Wichita is full of ways to play inside, such as All Star Sports, The Arcade, Dave & Busters and Wichita’s newest indoor attraction – Fun City Adventure Park, which features trampolines, ninja courses, climbing walls and more. Bowling is another great option for staying cool during summer months. Try locally owned Derby Bowl and Seneca Bowl or one of Bowlero’s three locations (WichitaNorthridge and Northrock). Each of these places are perfect for spontaneous rainy (or too sunny) afternoons.

Local Tip: Check Groupon and the attractions’ websites. You can often find 2-for-1 arcade cards or weekday discounts.

Two poeple look at artwork on display at the Wichita Art Museum

Wichita Art Museum

When you’d rather chill out with culture than adrenaline, cool off among world-class American art at the Wichita Art Museum. Stroll past works by Mary Cassatt, Dale Chihuly, Edward Hopper and more.

Local Tip: Admission is free, and the outdoor sculpture garden is perfect for a shady stroll if it’s not too hot.

A group of children is guided on a tour of Strataca

Strataca — The Kansas Underground Salt Museum (Hutchinson)

Just under an hour’s drive from Wichita, Strataca is worth the mini road trip. You’ll descend 650 feet below ground into a working salt mine — where it’s always 68 degrees. Take a guided tram tour through glittering salt tunnels, see mining equipment frozen in time, and learn why this unique underground world is used for movie storage and more.

Local Tip: Bring a light jacket and wear comfy shoes; you’ll walk on rough salt floors and dusty tunnels.
