When you visit Wichita, you’ll quickly learn where Douglas Avenue is and why it’s the place to be. From west of the Arkansas River to east Wichita, the street is lined with eateries, local boutiques, breweries and public art.
Along Douglas, just east of downtown is a 3-mile stretch known as the Douglas Design District where a spark has been ignited and there’s a fast-growing community – ready to welcome you in.
Back in 2007, Douglas Design District was just an idea. Now, it’s a district with more than 300 locally-owned businesses, including more than 40 home and design businesses featuring antiques, furniture, accessories, graphic design, web design and more.
The area has more than a dozen unique places to eat and popular breweries like Hopping Gnome Brewing Company and Central Standard Brewing. Popular eateries include The Anchor, Piatto Neapolitan Pizzeria, Tanya’s Soup Kitchen and Wine Dive. While in the district, you can satisfy your sweet tooth at area bakeries, a gourmet popcorn store, a donut shop, a chocolate candy store, a creamery and coffee shops like Reverie Coffee Roasters. You can also get your hands on international spices, coffees and teas at Wichita’s original, gourmet coffee roaster, The Spice Merchant & Company.
Art takes many forms around Wichita, but none give the city as urban a feel as the many murals decorating the downtown area, especially the Douglas Design District. From positive messages to a surplus of Wichita pride, the vibrant paintings speak life into abandoned buildings and engage the community in an appreciation for art.
One of the district's most unique features is the locally-created murals you will find in every nook and cranny. Visitors and locals alike enjoy exploring the area, looking for the area’s many murals and capturing them and most likely sharing them on social media using hashtags such as #ilovewichita, #visitwichita and #ictmoments.
And just when you think you’ve found all of the district’s murals, every September they create more during Avenue Art Days, an initiative driven by the district to harness young, local talent to beautify the city. Since 2015, Avenue Art Days has held three events, which included hundreds of volunteers and an abundance of Wichita pride. Come see for yourself what makes this up-and-coming district the talk of the town.
